  • A labor doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support to a person during childbirth. They help the birthing person feel more comfortable and confident throughout labor and delivery by offering techniques like breathing exercises, massage, and positioning advice.

While doulas do not perform medical tasks, they work alongside healthcare providers to support the birthing person’s preferences and needs. Labor doulas can also advocate for the birthing person by helping them communicate with medical staff, ensuring their birth plan is respected.

Here are some key aspects of what a labor doula does:

    1. Emotional Support: They offer continuous emotional reassurance and encouragement, helping to reduce anxiety and stress during labor.

    2. Physical Comfort: They assist with comfort measures such as breathing techniques, massage, position changes, and relaxation exercises to help manage labor pain.

    3. Advocacy: While they don’t make medical decisions, they support the birthing person’s preferences and communicate their needs to the medical team, ensuring that their voice is heard.

    4. Information: They provide evidence-based information about labor, birth options, and procedures, helping the birthing person make informed decisions.

    5. Partner Support: They assist the birthing person's partner or support person in understanding their role and how they can best provide support during labor.

    6. Continuous Presence: Unlike medical staff who may come and go, a labor doula remains with the birthing person throughout labor, offering consistent support.

    • Post-Birth Support: Some labor doulas also provide initial post-birth support, helping with immediate postpartum needs and assisting with early breastfeeding if desired.

Many people find that having a doula present can help reduce anxiety, improve satisfaction with the birth experience, and even decrease the need for medical interventions.
